Dental Care

Rejuvenate Your Smile

Spring is a time to feel rejuvenated, but we often forget about our teeth and gums. Many people suffer from receding gums, and for a while, there was no easy solution.

Screen Shot 2015-04-17 at 12.19.10 PMPinhole Gum Rejuvenation is an amazing technique that is revolutionizing the way dentists approach gum recession. deme’s Dental Director Dr. Thomas George is one of the first dentists in the United States—the first from New York to Virginia—to be professionally trained and certified to perform this procedure. Dr. George was even featured on CBS Philly for his expertise on this procedure last year.

demecosmetics_R5Receding gums can occur at any age, creating a skeletal looking smile and leaving your mouth vulnerable to infection.  Gum Grafting, the “old” way of fixing the problem of gum recession, is a very invasive and painful surgery with an extensive recovery time.  The Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique is a minimally invasive alternative that eliminates grafting and suturing, which means less pain and recovery time. A small access hole is made that allows patented instruments to loosen tissue that is then pulled up onto the roots of the affected teeth and supported with collagen.  The procedure only takes about an hour for 2-3 teeth and can enhance aesthetics, decrease sensitivity, and prevent further wear. Read more about the procedure here.

It’s Time to Reboot Your Skin Care Routine

Winter is winding down so it’s time to wake up and get your skin looking fresh! Read below for a step-by-step guide on how to reboot your routine.

  1. The first step to any skin care regimen is to exfoliate. Begin your reboot by using a gentle scrub, or even a Clarisonic cleansing brush, 2-3 times a week to eliminate dead skin cells and reveal a fresh layer of vibrant skin.
  1. After you have a fresh layer of skin to work with, it’s time to hydrate. Quench your skin’s thirst with a moisturizer suited to your skin type. For extra dry skin, emollient rich creams are the best choice because of their rich hydration content. Serums and water-based moisturizers are best for oily skin while a light lotion or serum is great for combination and normal skin. For a more in depth look on moisturizing for your specific skin type, check out this piece on hydrating regimens from deme’s clinical aestheticians.
  1. Be sure to drink a tall glass of water every morning, and stay hydrated throughout the day. When you’re not getting enough water, your skin shows it. Eat a diet full of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables like berries, spinach, and beans to give your skin an extra boost and help fight against skin damage.
  1. It may take a little while for your skin to show some results. While your waiting for your reboot to take effect, fake it until you make it! Use a light concealer to cover up your dark spots and some blush to define your cheekbones. This will give the appearance of a radiant glow even if your skin is still rebooting itself from within.
  1. Finish off your routine everyday with an SPF before leaving the house. Protecting your skin from the harsh rays of the sun will keep your skin soft with a luminous glow!

facialDe-Winterize Your Skin!

Dr. Marino will be seeing patients at deme Wayne on Wednesdays and deme Philadelphia on Fridays.

jackfruitWhat in the world is jackfruit?

Jackfruit is considered a miracle crop in countries like Bangladesh, but it is still widely unheard of in the United States. So what is it, and what makes it a miracle?

Jackfruit grows on jackfruit trees, originating in Southeast Asia. The yellowish-orange fruit is large, prickly, and it can sometimes weigh up to 100 pounds. Aside from the nutritional fruit they produce, jackfruit trees are extremely important to the environments in which they are grown. In Bangladesh, the wood from trees is often sold as timber; the bark produces a sticky substance that is used as glue and also has an orange color that can be used as dye. Additionally, the fruit can feed farm animals as well as millions of malnourished people in the region due to the large number of lobes each jackfruit produces.

So why is it exciting that this fruit is available in the US? It is filled with so many nutrients that it keeps the body full for hours; Jackfruit is rich in dietary fiber, and has significant amounts of Vitamin-A, Vitamin-B and Vitamin-C. The fruit is also rich in potassium while the seeds are a good source of protein. It can be eaten fresh or cooked into tasty meals. Popular in the vegan community, it is often used as a substitute for pulled pork. Excited to try it? Check your city’s Chinatown section for a market selling fresh jackfruit then check out these delicious recipes!

pexels-photo-12344-largeRelaxing Your Mind

Meditation is a simple relaxation practice that has been used for decades. However, a New York Times study was recently released that explains exactly how this practice works to help benefit your mind, body, and spirit. According to Business Insider, these two actions take place during meditation that affect your health in a positive way:

  1. There is increased communication between the left prefrontal cortex and default-mode network areas of the brain.
  2. Levels of IL-6 are lowered, which causes stress to decrease. IL-6 is a substance linked to inflammation and stress levels.

Laser Hair Removal
Don’t be scared! Check out some FAQs

The air may be chilly, but Spring Break will hit before you know it, and one of the most popular ways to prepare for swimsuit season is laser hair removal. Laser hair removal has technologically improved over the years, creating many misconceptions about the procedure today. We’ve compiled a list of some frequently asked questions so you can decide if it’s time to take the plunge!

How does it work?
Laser hair removal aims a highly concentrated beam of light at one’s body hair. The hair pigment then absorbs the light, damaging the follicle at the root and decelerating future hair growth.

What areas can the laser treat?
Almost any area of the body can be treated with laser hair removal. The most common areas for both men and women to have treated are legs, back, stomach, arms, underarms, and bikini area. deme also has compact laser heads to reach smaller areas like ears
before_hair_removalafter_hair_removaland nostrils.

How many treatments do I need?
Typically, 4-6 treatments are needed for laser hair removal to be effective. Not all hairs are in an active growth stage at the same time. Having multiple treatments ensures that all hairs are targeted during their active growth stages.

What should I do to prepare?
Do not wax or pluck hairs for 6 weeks prior to your first session. Waxing and plucking remove the root of the hair, and therefore leave nothing for the lasers to target. Also, avoid sunlight before laser hair removal; tanning prior to laser hair removal can lead to pigmentation of the skin.

How often should I go?
Your first few treatments should be done in regular intervals, usually every 4-6 weeks depending on the area of the body you are having treated. Once the hair growth has slowed down significantly, your aesthetician can recommend a timeline for remaining treatments.

Is it permanent?
Many people see a 100% reduction in hair growth after laser hair removal. However, the majority of people see a 70-90% reduction. If this is the case, extra maintenance visits can be scheduled to eliminate the remaining hair.

Is it painful?
The level of discomfort varies from person to person, but most patients report a “snapping” feeling on the skin that is less painful than waxing or plucking. deme’s lasers also have a cooling mechanism that ensures the surface of your skin stays cool and comfortable during treatment.

Microblading- COMING SOON!
The Hottest New Technique in Shaping Eyebrows

Many women share the common, embarrassing problem of over-plucked, over-waxed, thinning eyebrows. Filling in brows with pencils and other make-up products has become a daily task for many, but Microblading has stepped onto the scene to change the game for those with sparse eyebrows.

What is microblading? It is a semi-permanent procedure that involves a certified technician manually depositing ink under the top layer of skin by using a special pen. Individual hair strokes are crisply drawn onto the skin, creating the appearance of  natural hairs. By sticking to the outer layer of skin, the pigment never reaches the dermis, unlike getting an actual tattoo. The pen used in microblading utilizes a blade that is three times thinner than the blade used for tattooing. Numbing ointment is used so the procedure is virtually painless, and there is no downtime afterwards.

Microblading is perfect for those with sparse brows, or those who wish to cover scars, fill in gaps, or create a natural-looking arch. This new procedure will be offered very soon by deme’s very own “brow whisperer” Ani White!

food-healthy-soup-leek-largeBone Broth
Sound strange? It’s the hottest health food trend.

Bone broth was one of the hottest health food trends of 2015, but did you actually try it? New food trends can always be a little scary to try for the first time, especially when hear of something called bone broth. Don’t worry; it’s not as scary as it sounds! We have your guide to trying this deliciously healthy food for the first time.

Bone broths are a popular part of paleo diet and are typically made with either chicken or beef bones. Some broths also contain a small amount of meat still adhered to the bones; they are typically simmered for several hours in order to extract minerals from the bones and produce gelatin from the joints, which are rich in collagen. This infuses the broth with several nutrients including magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus, which can help in easing arthritis and joint pain. Since bone broth is rich in gelatin, it is a great source of protein that also helps hair and nail growth, as well as digestion and detoxing. It is also a great anti-inflammatory. Magic Water Droplets

In 2015, beauty trends from Korea invaded the U.S., and sheet masks and brightening products were all the rage. This year, the Korean invasion continues as the skin care industry is seeing a breakthrough new formula on the rise.

The make-up at New York trade shows this year featured Korea’s latest skin care advancement, “magic water droplets.” This trendy new formula is very similar to a serum, but it is extremely lightweight. Made up of tiny micro-droplets, this new formula cools and moisturizes on contact. It can even reduce redness and firm the skin. This type of product is perfect for people who need hydration but don’t want to feel oily.

Bold Statements

In recent years, a clean, simple look has taken over the make-up scene, but all that is ending in 2016. Bright lips and dramatic eyes are making a comeback. Whether it’s shiny or matte, bright red lipstick is a trend all designers and celebs are following in the new year. Equally as bold, blue is the color for eyes in 2016. From navy to turquoise, all shades are in. Go with a more traditional look with a navy smoky eye shadow or spice it up with bright blue lines across your lids. This blue trend has even made it’s way to mascara. Colored mascaras are a great way to add your own personal style to your look this year for fun occasions.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

You’ll want to look your best and feel confident while taking on the season’s soirees, and sometimes a teeth whitening treatment is all it takes. At deme, our dental professionals use Zoom Whitening, leaving your pearly whites at least 3-5 shades lighter depending on a patient’s age, dental history, beverage consumption (such as coffee, tea, wine and cola) and use of cigarettes and cigars.

The session lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. The preparation time is approximately 20 minutes, followed by one hour of active whitening in which product is applied to the teeth every 15 minutes. Patients can eat right away after a whitening treatment, but avoid eating or drinking anything that would stain a white t-shirt for 24 hours!

Hydrating Regimens

woman-legs-relaxation-beautyIn the heart of Fall comes colder weather and for some, drier skin. deme’s clinical aestheticians have some advice to help you select the moisturizer that’s right for you.

Always choose a moisturizer based on your skin type. An easy way to determine this is to examine how your skin feels at the end of the day. Is your T-Zone dry, oily, or somewhat normal? Our clinical aestheticians suggest using the following guidelines to choose the perfect moisturizer for you:

Emollient rich creams are the best choice because of the rich hydration content. These creams are ultra moisturizing and softening for the skin. Lactic acid is also a great moisturizing ingredient because it is the most hydrating of the AHA family.

Serums and water-based moisturizers are best. Hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient for oily skin because it sits on the skin and does not clog pores.

A light lotion or serum is your best bet because they will not clog your pores. Lactic acid is also great for this skin type.

Lotions are a great choice.

No matter what your skin type, make sure you exfoliate before hydrating so your skin can absorb the moisturizer. Some exfoliating ingredients include lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids. Always remember that moisturizing is just one of many steps in your skin care routine. Follow up with an SPF to protect your soft skin from the rays of the sun.

College Dental Essentialsphilips-sonicare-essence-electric-toothbrush-mdn

A few months ago, your kids left for college, and they probably forgot a few things. Just because they left home, does not mean they should leave their dental care there. When your college students head home for Thanksgiving this month, make sure they have all of their dental needs in that dorm room! Dr. Tom George, deme’s Director of Dentistry, recommends the following for keeping your student’s smile bright and white:

  • Sonicare Toothbrush– electric toothbrushes drive fluid deep in between teeth and along the gums for a deep clean and whiter, healthier smile.
  • Fluoride Toothpaste– fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque, strengthen enamel and prevent tooth decay.
  • Glide Dental Floss– Glide floss slides easily into tight spaces in your mouth for a more comfortable flossing experience.

Pumpkin Season

pumpkinOctober is here and the pumpkin craze is in full swing. We love it in our lattes and as a sweet treat, but pumpkin doesn’t just taste good. It’s packed with plenty of health benefits that will make you feel good about eating it! Here are some of the nutritional benefits you can enjoy this Fall:

  1. Pumpkin is a great source of fiber with 3 grams per cup. Eating a fiber-rich diet is a great way to feel fuller for longer, which in turn promotes weight loss. Fiber also promotes a healthy digestive system.
  2. Orange foods tend to be high in beta-carotene, and pumpkin is no exception. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant and precursor to vitamin A that is linked to cancer prevention, healthy skin, and sharp eyesight. In fact, one cup of cooked pumpkin contains more than 200% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A.
  3. Pumpkin seeds are high in phytosterols, which reduces bad cholesterol and promotes heart health.
  4. Potassium-rich foods like pumpkin balance the body’s electrolytes, which restores energy and promotes muscle health, making pumpkin a great post-workout snack.
  5. One cup of pumpkin has more than 11 milligrams of vitamin C, which is linked to a healthy immune system and is thought to help in fighting off colds.

ISHRS Conference

12030391_1641166479493622_4795427269053929774_oLast month, Dr. Tom Griffin and nurse Maureen Griffin from the Griffin Hair Restoration Center of Philadelphia attended the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) Conference in Chicago. The conference was host to leaders in the field of hair restoration from around the world and covered topics in all areas of hair loss treatment. Dr. Griffin and Maureen attended seminars on eyebrow transplants, FUE (follicular unit extraction), SMP (scalp micro pigmentation), and PRP (platelet rich plasma). “We are gratified to see that we are using the most modern technology and methods, which have been proven to work by other doctors in the field,” commented Dr. Griffin.

One of the latest advancements in hair restoration is the upgrade to site making technology by ARTAS. Physicians can now design personalized recipient site patterns on a 3D patient model, which can then be transferred to the ARTAS Robotic System to perform an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking hair transplant. This new technology is now available at the Griffin Hair Restoration Center of Philadelphia.

Fall Make-Up Trends

makeup-677200_640As the leaves are changing, so are the trends. Make-up is one facet of your look that you can always experiment with while having fun. If you’re a fan of bold lips, rejoice because red is making a comeback. From bright berries to deeper oxbloods, red lipstick has returned as this season’s staple look.

When it comes to eyes, metallic shadows aren’t going anywhere, but bronze is stepping into the spotlight. Make-up artists have been opting for this warmer metallic as opposed to more classic golds and silvers. Line your eyes with a graphic black liner that will elongate your eyes and make them pop, and finish off with your favorite mascara.

Pair this look with a subdued red or a more neutral-hued lip color. Take a break from contouring, and add some warmth to your face with a peach or rose blush. This will give you bright cheeks without having to spend time outside in the brisk, Autumn air.

Firstly, it is best to shave immediately after showering since the skin is moist and facial hair is wet and flexible. Shaving creams with aloe can also help soften the skin and hairs, especially when lathered up and left on the face for a minute prior to shaving. Creams with glycolic acid or salicylic acid help to exfoliate and unclog pores, preventing ingrown hairs.

After shaving, apply an aftershave lotion to soothe the facial skin and follow up with a moisturizer suited for your skin type.  If shaving is not enough, hair laser removal can now target smaller areas on the face. The Soprano ICE laser at deme now comes with smaller heads to reach inside areas such as ears and nostrils to remove unwanted hair.

Plastic Surgery

Do you want the results of plastic surgery but don’t want to go under the knife? There is now a solution that gives patients the best of both worlds. Ultherapy is the first non-surgical procedure to use focused ultrasound energy for skin lifting, firming, and tightening on the face, neck, and now the décolletage. It is an office based procedure and the first of its kind.

The FDA-approved device used in Ultherapy utilizes the safe, time-tested energy of an ultrasound to stimulate the deep structural support layers of the skin—including those typically addressed in a surgical facelift—without disturbing the surface of the skin.  This is done through a process by which the ultrasound energy is focused on the deep tissues of the skin, below the surface of the skin.  As a result of this, the skin surface remains untouched, while the deeper tissues are firmed and stimulated to produce new and tighter collagen.

The procedure takes 30-60 minutes, with little to no down time and very little risk.  Patients are often able to leave the office and immediately interact socially without any evidence of having had the procedure.  A gradual improvement in the appearance of the treatment area is seen over a six-month period.  Results tend to last two to three years, with boosts possible at that time to maintain improvement.

Cross Medical Group’s Director of Clinical Nursing Jessica Gallen, RN is a Certified Advanced Ultherapy Provider and can customize treatments to fit each patient’s needs. For more information and to schedule a consultation, call Cross Medical Group at 215-561-9100.

Eyebrows: The Trend that Won’t Stop Growing

It seems like everyone is obsessed with their eyebrows recently, and this trend is not going anywhere fast. Each person’s eyebrows are unique and should be shaped to complement an individual’s face. But what happens when there isn’t quite enough hair to shape? That is where the eyebrow transplant comes in.

Brow Event

There are a number of causes of eyebrow hair loss. Hair loss can refer to an over-thinning of the eyebrows, patchiness, or baldness of the entire eyebrow region. The most common problems that can be treated by an eyebrow hair transplant include:

  • Over-plucking of eyebrows that results in permanent thinning or hair loss
  • Naturally thin eyebrows
  • Hair loss due to illness
  • Trauma or surgery that has left scar tissue in the region, resulting in hair loss
  • Certain skin conditions

An eyebrow hair transplant is an effective way to permanently restore hair growth in the eyebrow area. Eyebrow hair transplants are performed similarly to scalp hair transplants, but they require an additional level of skill and artistry to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result.

After a successful transplant by Dr. Thomas Griffin, your eyebrows can then be exquisitely sculpted by deme’s very own Ani White, LE, the two-time Best of Philly “Brow Whisperer” herself.

To learn more about the procedure performed by Dr. Griffin, visit the Griffin Hair Restoration Center of Philadelphia’s website by clicking here, and join us on June 3rd from 6-8 p.m. at the Murano, 2101 Market St. in Philadelphia, for a discussion on hair loss in men and women, robotic hair transplants, eyebrow transplants, and how to find the best brow shape for your face. Complimentary wine and cheese will be served. RSVP by June 2nd to

A Charity We Love: Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia

Cancer Support Community Greater Philadelphia is a cause close to deme’s heart. Betsy Rubenstone, Director of Skin Care found comfort in CSCGP as she began her own battle with stage four lung cancer back in 2013, and she now gives back to the cause that has helped to support her.

CSCGP’s mission is “to ensure that all people affected by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.” This mission is achieved through numerous programs, many of which are listed below:

Programs for Children

Summer Camp.  Camp allows children to have a week of supportive fun with other kids who are going through a similarly difficult experience.  Meals are provided every day, and for some kids, this is their main meal for the day.  Camp gives the parent(s) a desperately needed break to rest or attend medical appointments.

Kid Support.  Kid Support is a 10 week program for a child with cancer or a child with a parent battling cancer.  Each week, mental health professionals and counselors work with kids to normalize the cancer experience and teach coping strategies that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.  Parents attend a concurrent “Parent Support Group” to share the challenges of raising a family while going through treatment.  For many parents, this is a life line of support which decreases anxiety and depression and helps them adhere to their medical treatment plan.

STAC (Straight Talk About Cancer).  STAC is a peer support group for teens ages 12-18 who have cancer themselves and/or a parent with cancer. Our mental health professionals currently run these groups in eight local schools. The groups occur during the children’s regular school day.

Programs for Adults

Mindful Meditation, Yoga, Tai Chi & QiGong, Zumba, Couch to 5K Exercise, Pilates, Reike Share

Living with Cancer Support Groups, Caregivers Support Group, Men’s Breakfast, Bereavement Support Group, Specific Cancer Support Groups (Breast, Colon, Lung, etc.)

Writing for Wellness, Art Therapy, Singing Circle, Quilting, Cooking/Nutrition Programs, Look Good, Feel Better

Educational Programs such as Frankly Speaking about Lung Cancer, or Open to Options to help cancer patients navigate through all treatment options available to them.

If you are interested in learning more about CSCGP or would like to get involved, please call 215-879-7733 and ask for Nicole DeCicco, Program Director.
