Eyebrows are one of our most expressive facial features, but as we age, the muscles around the eyebrows grow lax, causing a drooping effect. This means that even at rest, eyebrows can give us the appearance of looking angry or tired, even when we’re not–affecting how the world responds to us, which can generate a negative feedback loop with everyone we encounter, sometimes causing us needless emotional distress. Refining the shape and correcting the position of the eyebrows can change not only how youthful, alert, and friendly you look, but it can also erase the unintentional look of fatigue or irritation.

Time-tested methods of adjusting the position of the eyebrows involved an incision that went across the top of the head. While this approach is still used and can be very helpful in some patients (those in need of a forehead reduction, for example), deme’s Head of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kevin Cross, prefers the newer technique of using four small incisions, each less than the width of a fingernail, hidden in the hairline above the forehead.

Using endoscopic equipment and cameras, the brows are placed into the proper position and secured with a fastener placed under the skin in the area above the hairline.  This small device is self-dissolving within six months, as the tissues heal and no longer require the support of the fastener.  Dr. Cross may also deploy other techniques, including using the same incision  used for upper eyelid rejuvenation or making an incision hidden in the eyebrow itself, after deciding, with you, what the best approach is for your particular goals. Moreover, a brow lift is often combined with other procedures to address excess skin or fat around the eyelids, or cosmetic injectables, to achieve the most natural-looking effect.

Recovery takes a few weeks; there is little pain, but there is some some bruising and swelling.  Since all of the incisions are hidden in the hair bearing scalp, it is quite easy to hide this procedure once the swelling and bruising subsides.  After two weeks, patients are allowed to return to strenuous activities.
